  Hands-on Experience

It's well known that students' lives are not limited by lectures. To solidify knowledge it's necessary to apply it in practice. In the modern world it's quite hard to find a job for a newly qualified specialist without job experience, that's why internships become even more important.
Antalya College of Tourism students have a chance not only to try hands in the chosen qualification in the best Antalya hotels, but also to earn money in the course of practice.
Lately we have visited a couple of hotels where our students are undertaking internships and asked them to share their feelings concerning the practice.

Anstasia Suslina, 2nd Year - guest relation manager, "Fame Residence Lara":

- I like it very much here. I don't regret staying for internship. I'm glad I've chosen this hotel. Working in guest relation department I have access to other departments and have a chance to master special computer programs in practice.
My duties consist in communication with guests: I solve their problems and answer their questions. We poll guests, add data to a database, book a la carte restaurants. We also help with interpretation at the reception. We communicate a lot with different tourists: basically these are Russian, German, and Israeli tourists. Here I can see in practice what we studied theoretically at the College. Language proficiency helps a lot.
Hotel staff and managers treat us [interns] well. We live with other interns in the hotel's hostel. Certainly, we are sometimes tired, work will be work...
I often deal with clients' complaints. I think that to work in this position it is first of all necessary to be patient and know psychology... Next year I would like to work at the same department.

Vladimir Uysimbaev, 2nd Year - animation team, Fame Residence Lara:
- It's nice to work here. Knowledge acquired at the College - how to behave, how to communicate with people - was of great use.
Last year I was an intern at the guest relation department. There everything is very serious, and here my work is both interesting and responsible. Previously I didn't even think to work with children. Now I work in the mini-club: walk the boards, communicate with tourists, and develop acting skills. And I'm also learning German.
In a hotel everybody treats us very friendly and kindly, living conditions are fine - we have all needments; meals are great.
Next year I would like to try working at reception or as a guide. I think that in studies I should pay more attention to marketing and management - I'm interested in these fields.

Askar Shalov, 1st Year - barman, Club Salima Hotel:
- I like my work very much. It's great that I can practice languages and communicate with people. Everything is cool! Hotel managers are fantastic, they treat us very well!
We haven't studied special subjects yet, but I think that after practice it will be easier for me to master them.
I will certainly undertake internship next year but I don't know in which hotel department.
Sometimes we get tired, but there is sea nearby, we play tennis and sleep a lot...
Here are a few recipes of non-alcoholic cocktails that I prepare for our guests:
- a German hotel "Schpitze": Fanta and Cola in ratio 1:1
- cocktail "Tan-tal": Sprite and Cola in the same ratio
- Banana cocktail: milk, banana syrup, ice, sugar and chocolate - mix them in a mixer and enjoy!

Eugenia Khayrulina, 2nd year - guest relation manager, Club Salima Hotel:
- I like my job very much. My duties include communication with guests, recording guests' remarks, wishes, complaints. I also handle questionnaires, receive orders for celebration our guests' holidays. I'm very happy I have chosen this profession. And internship proves it. Knowledge, acquired at the College, helped me a lot. And when you face some problem in practice you realize the essence of the job in full. I think that the most important subjects I will pay attention to are marketing and management. I'm sure internship is an indispensable element of theoretical knowledge reinforcement. It isn't easy to work but there are always more experienced colleagues who are ready to help and teach you something new.
Our staff is very friendly. We have all necessary living conditions. I'm very happy I'm undertaking this internship.

Albina Tukusheva 1st Year - barman, Club Salima Hotel:

- I'm working work at the pool-bar. This is service near the pool and on the hotel beach. Here I can see in practice the way hotel management operates, the way working process is built, everything is obvious. The most useful part of the internship for me is language practice. Next year I would like to work at the same hotel but may be in a different department. I don't regret that I decided to undertake this internship at all.

We've been communicating with our students in their workplaces for a long time, and their open happy faces were the best evidence that they were satisfied with their jobs. We also came into the hostel to see those boys and girls who were just going to work in the evening. It turned out they live in friendship. Their rooms are equipped with all the needments. Our students expressed genuine hospitality.

Our students agreed that practice is necessary. And to manage a hotel in future it's necessary to try different positions at first. One shouldn't be afraid of hard jobs since all of them are very interesting and important especially when one believes them to be so.
